Explore the world of smart homes and home automation technologies. Discover how the two arenas intersect to create a dream smart home, creating the benefits of automated features that increase enjoyment, and enhance many aspects of the modern living experience in your home.
What is Home Automation?
Home automation is the process of automatically controlling various home devices when needed through technology, allowing them to be managed remotely without the need for manual control. It encompasses systems that connect different devices, including multi-room audio, Heating & Cooling, Lighting, Security, and any other switches devices you often interact with in your home. Home automation simply enables homeowners to streamline their daily tasks with ease.
With the right home automation system, you can control lights, thermostats, door locks, and appliances from your smartphone or through voice commands, as well as have them automatically perform tasks at times and in situations you want. This not only enhances convenience but also improves enjoyment, energy efficiency and safety in your home.
Adaptable & Customizable Solutions
Home automation has its roots in when we found the need to combine a few remotes for the TV and stereo way back in the 70’s. That universal remote was really the grandfather of home automation, and today the control of ever more sophisticated streaming Audio and Home Theater systems is still a big reason initially to implement a home automation system. Starting from that one home theater or media room – that needs multiple A/V things to turn on and switch to the right conditions, along with lighting & blinds to set the mood. It’s a small, fun ecosystem that powerfully illustrates the benefit of a larger automated system, across multiple platforms.
Zooming out, in addition to basic functionalities, advanced home automation systems can learn from your habits and preferences, adapting to your lifestyle & routines over time. Obviously, thermostats can adjust the temperature based on a simple built-in scheduler. But a smart thermostat can be controlled based on other parameters – like the time of year, the exterior temperature, or the state of home occupancy to name a few. Your daily routine overlaid on these other factors ensure that your home is always comfortable while minimizing energy consumption.
Similarly, automated lighting systems can act on customized schedules and respond to your presence, turning on or off as you enter or leave a room, which can significantly reduce electricity bills. They can even come on to different levels and color temperatures defined by the light present around the home, reflecting your circadian rhythm. Lights can be triggered by any other smart devices. For a simple example of this – when the Garage door opens, and it’s dark out, and its in the evening, but not after midnight the exterior& interior lights on the garage, and interior mudroom come on.
Moreover, home automation can reference and integrate with security systems to provide real-time monitoring and alerts. Imagine receiving notifications on your smartphone whenever someone approaches your back garage door or when a leak occurs under your fridge or washing machine.
That relates to smart cameras and motion sensors, which allow you to keep an eye on your property from anywhere in the world, providing peace of mind whether you’re at home or on vacation. The integration of such technologies not only enhances your home’s security but gives you the information you want and doesn’t flood you with automated messages with low priority.
Key Components of a Quality Home Automation System
Home automation systems consist of several essential components that work together seamlessly. Understanding these components can help you create a more efficient automated home.
Proper Design and Implementation: The best products don’t do anything without being part of a well designed system implemented and serviced by professionals who know what they are doing. It’s easy to miss the fact that the beginning of a quality hone automation system starts with a human who knows what they are doing!
Home Automation Devices: The right control processor is paramount – it’s the brain of the system that has the needed processing power, and control capabilities to operate all of the smart devices in the system design. Check out our Control4 Integrated Home. Then, include the other needed controls, appliances or fixtures correct for the situation, including smart thermostats, relays, sensors, smart lights, and security cameras that can be controlled remotely by the same protocol.
Network Connectivity: A correctly designed and stable Network – including Wi-Fi is crucial for remote access and device interaction.
The GUI: The Graphic User Interface is the way you interact with your system. It can be a simple elegant wand-style remote control, a wall mounted or portable dedicated touch screen, your phone, iPad or computer.
Voice Control
In addition to these primary components, the integration of voice assistants has become a significant aspect of modern home automation. Devices like Amazon Echo or Google Nest allow users to control their smart home systems through simple voice commands, making it even easier to manage daily tasks without the need to physically interact with devices. This hands-free capability not only enhances convenience but also promotes accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the benefits of a smart home.
Security Features
Another important consideration in home automation is the control over implementation of security protocols. As homes become increasingly connected, ensuring the safety of personal data and devices is paramount. Many systems now include advanced encryption methods and two-factor authentication to protect against unauthorized access, but we want to access our stuff with a minimum of intrusion too. Home automation gives us the power with control.
Regular software updates are always essential to patch vulnerabilities and enhance the overall security of the home automation network, providing peace of mind for homeowners as they embrace this innovative technology.
What is a Smart Home?
A smart home refers to a residence that incorporates internet-connected devices to enable remote management and monitoring of systems and appliances. This connectivity allows for smarter living, while offering improved efficiency and convenience.
ResiNet™ Smart Home Wiring
Wiring is still very important. While many items can be accessed via wireless protocols, a cable is still the fastest, and most secure way to access many home automation items. With a smart home, features such as integrated wiring like ResiNet™, advanced home security systems, and energy management become easily accessible. Owners can customize settings to fit their lifestyles, whether it be adjusting room temperatures, scheduling lights, or remotely monitoring security feeds with optimal speed and security.
The Evolution of Smart Home Technologies
Smart home technologies have evolved significantly since their early days and continue to advance at record pace. What began with basic remote controls for televisions has transformed into sophisticated systems that integrate machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Innovation in wireless technology, user interfaces, and cloud computing has been crucial in this evolution. Today, smart homes feature self-learning systems that can predict a homeowner’s habits, and thus needs – further enhancing usability and convenience. Importantly, these benefits are presented at a level the homeowner wants and is comfortable with.
Summarizing The Differences Between Home Automation & Smart Home Tech
Home Automation
Focus: Automating specific tasks, routines and systems within the home.
Core Product Functionality: Involves pre-programmed or automated control of devices and systems like lighting, music, home theater and television, climate, blinds, security or irrigation.
Control: Often operates on a “set it and forget it” principle, where tasks run on schedules or respond to conditions (e.g., lights turn on at sunset).
Integration: Can exist as standalone systems without requiring interconnectedness across the home.
Example: A thermostat that adjusts temperatures automatically based on time or occupancy without needing user input.
Smart Home
Focus: Creating an interconnected ecosystem of devices that users can control and customize.
Core Functionality: Centers around user interactivity through apps, voice commands, or centralized hubs.
Control: Offers flexibility and manual control, allowing users to override automation at any time. After all, life is impossible to completely pre-plan.
Integration: Emphasizes connectivity and communication regarding, and between devices, often through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or smart home platforms (e.g., Control4, Alexa, Google Home).
Example: A system where the thermostat, lights, locks and blinds communicate and adjust collectively when you say, “Set to Movie Mode” Or “Expect a Guest”
Key Differences in Application:
Home Automation: Practical and task-focused, with a primary goal of efficiency and convenience through automation.
Smart Home: Experience-oriented, aiming for customization, connectivity, and enhancing the home’s interactivity and control experience.
Where Smart Home Technologies and Home Automation Intersect
Though often used interchangeably, smart home and home automation technologies are subtly different yet interconnected concepts. Home automation focuses primarily on controlling devices automatically, while the smart home encompasses broader connectivity in one ecosystem.
The intersection occurs when automated systems employ smart technology to enhance functionality. For example, a smart lighting system in a home automation setup might change its brightness based on the time of day, or the sun’s nevus creating a more intelligent living environment.
Key Differences Between Smart Home and Home Automation

In contrast, a smart home encompasses multiple systems functionalities across various devices, making it a more comprehensive solution for users looking to create a simple yet cohesive ecosystem.
3. Integration
Integration capabilities are critical for both concepts to operate as intended. Home automation often revolves around isolated systems, while a smart home thrives on interconnectivity. The ability to link various devices for a unified experience is what elevates the smart home beyond basic automation. Making that happen, and ensuring the experience is seamless is the job of a human – your automation specialist.
Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings with Home Automation
A significant benefit of home automation is energy efficiency and cost savings. Automated systems can significantly reduce energy consumption through optimized usage of the homes various sub systems.
For instance, smart thermostats learn your heating and cooling preferences to maximize comfort while minimizing costs. Additionally, automated lighting can turn off when not in use, saving both energy and money. Occupancy sensors and advanced schedulers enhance both, by tailoring those control commands to your day-to-day use of your home.
Benefits of Integrating Smart Devices in Your Home
Integrating smart devices in your home brings a set of benefits that considerably enhance everyone’s living experience. They provide comfort, convenience and control while enhancing your daily routine.
Effortless Enjoyment: Simple access to music, news, television and home theater control makes winding down at the end of the day, entertaining or just chilling in your home a real pleasure.

Shopping Tips for a New Reality – perspective from our shop floor
Written by Geoff Woods, a consultant and programmer here for over 20 years.
I’ve just got used to writing “2021” and we’re already talking about Christmas shopping. Well. . . Okay, to be fair, my wife is already doing her Christmas shopping. Like most guys I know, I was probably going to procrastinate until December 17th at least, like every year. But this year it looks like that strategy would be a mistake.
Disruption
You don’t exactly have to have your ear to the ground to know that supply chains have been disrupted lately. Every industry from automobiles to snack foods has been affected. Items that used to come in 7-10 days are now 10 weeks out if we’re lucky, and some items literally have “no ETA.”
We don’t need to hash out the 107 converging causal factors that have contributed to this. Suffice it to say that no one person, policy, germ, or weather phenomena is solely responsible. Even if we could point the funky finger of blame in one direction, assigning fault won’t solve anything in the here and now. So really, it doesn’t matter whose fault it is, it’s still everybody’s problem.
So how much is K&W affected? More importantly, what can we do to help K&W’s valued customer mitigate how you are affected by this unfolding disaster?
Here’s some good news and some straight-up, unvarnished bad news.
First the good news:
We live in Canada! Aside from having a lot more freedom than what is being experienced in many other places, one of the best things about Canada is we manufacture some of THE BEST speakers in the whole world. I’m not making this up. Canadian loudspeakers are like Italian sports cars. We are world renowned for the quality and value of our speakers. As well, because we don’t have to cross borders and pay duties and tariffs on them, we get them for the best prices. K&W is proud to represent the best selection of Canadian speaker brands available ANYWHERE. As a bonus, lead times on most of these products are not nearly as terrible as items coming across the ocean. So if somebody has speakers on their Christmas list, they’re in luck.
We saw this coming! It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve been working double time to buy more stock, earlier than we ever have going into the Christmas season. Obviously there are still shortfalls and will continue to be. But we’ve managed to get ahead of this crunch on quite a few high demand items and, provided you don’t procrastinate too long (like me), we can probably get your wish list fulfilled, but I do recommend you DON’T put it off too long.
Music is COOL. I highly recommend you turn off the news and listen to music more often. It WILL make you a happier person, I promise. And fortunately there aren’t as many shortages on classic stereo gear as there is on A/V receivers and other items that require digital chips. Dust off your old vinyl and dig out your CD collection, we can get you fixed up with a great playback system in time for the holidays.
Now for the bad news:
Prices are going up. Many already have, but the trend is not stopping. With skyrocketing shipping costs and labour shortages galore, hardly a day goes by without us receiving a new price list from a supplier and none of the numbers on those lists are getting smaller, except maybe in the column showing quantity available. It’s a hard reality, but it is reality. If you know what you want, don’t wait, cuz chances are it will NOT be cheaper later.
Some key items simply aren’t available. Digital music streamers and entry level Surround Sound receivers have suffered the hardest impact, and while stock is trickling in, demand has also been higher than anyone expected. We are taking deposits for back orders on these items and are running on a first come, first served basis. But we aren’t the ones off-loading the ships or driving the trucks, so we just are not able to make promises.
Our installers are BUSY! This is good news for us, but for those who are waiting to get a system installed, it means you need to plan a bit further ahead and exercise a bit more patience. Because of the unpredictability of supply chains, we simply can NOT book an install until we have ALL the system components IN STOCK. By the time all those items are in stock, the waiting list can be weeks out. So the window of time for getting a complete system and getting it installed by Christmas is already very quickly closing. Alternatively, maybe think about that one extra special upgrade component to take an existing system to the next level—a simple install like that is much more likely to get shoe-horned into the schedule.
Finally, one last thought regarding this year’s holiday shopping:
We really do appreciate your loyalty and patronage. For 43 years, we have striven to be your chosen Hi-Fi and Home Theatre destination shop in Calgary, and hope to keep it going for decades more to come. What often makes the difference between a mediocre sound system and a great one is expertise in selection and a personal touch… neither of which is an Amazon hallmark.
There. I said it. With hundreds of ships carrying thousands of containers filled with millions of products languishing off shore waiting for ports to catch up, you can’t be completely sure that the item you order on line will get here in time. Even if it does, it might not actually be exactly the right item for YOU too.
So please come and talk to one of our system designers. We have over a century of combined experience in this field, and since we work at a bricks and mortar (literally) store front in your neighborhood, you always know where to find us. As a result, we have an ongoing, vested interest in making sure you are happy with your purchase.
Thanks to you for your ongoing support of our local business. I invite personally you to come down and meet a fellow Calgarian, maybe go home with something cool that day. Or at the very least, be assured that you’ll get straight answers about what you need, and when you can have it.

Understanding Home Automation and Smart Home Technologies
/in Alberta, Calgary, Home Automation, Light Control, Resinet, Smart HomeExplore the world of smart homes and home automation technologies.
Smart Home
Key Differences in Application:
Where Smart Home Technologies and Home Automation Intersect
Though often used interchangeably, smart home and home automation technologies are subtly different yet interconnected concepts. Home automation focuses primarily on controlling devices automatically, while the smart home encompasses broader connectivity in one ecosystem.
The intersection occurs when automated systems employ smart technology to enhance functionality. For example, a smart lighting system in a home automation setup might change its brightness based on the time of day, or the sun’s nevus creating a more intelligent living environment.
Key Differences Between Smart Home and Home Automation
1. User Interaction
While smart homes allow for remote interaction, home automation prioritizes automation to reduce the need for manual oversight. Smart devices can often be controlled with voice commands, while automation is aimed at minimizing the user’s involvement altogether.
2. Functionality
Home automation systems can just serve specific function areas of the home, such as lighting control or climate management.

Now for the bad news:
Looking forward to seeing you soon!

DSD and ALAC playback support have been doubled to DSD128 and ALAC 192kHz for better high-resolution audio performance.
For video, the MX123 has 7 HDMI inputs and 3 HDMI outputs. Streaming options on the MX123 include Apple® AirPlay 2® along with Bluetooth® and Spotify Connect for easy streaming from mobile devices. AirPlay 2 is an Apple technology designed to control home audio systems and speakers in any room – with a tap or by just asking Siri – right from an iPhone®, iPad®, HomePod™, or Apple TV®. It offers multiroom audio, Siri voice control, and enhanced playback. TuneIn is also included for further music streaming options. To assist with streaming performance and reliability, wireless connectivity has been improved to include 2.4/5GHz dual band support.
Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 is included and will calibrate the MX123 to a home theater’s unique acoustical properties, letting it deliver the clearest and most balanced earth-shattering sound possible. Each discrete audio channel has its own 32-bit premium Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) to produce the best audio quality. The MX123 can be paired with a variety of home theater amplifiers and speakers to create a killer cinema experience in the comfort of one’s home. Front panel buttons or a comprehensive remote control allow for easy system operation, and it’s fully compatible with Control4.
